Questions
Thirty-one answers, including the uncomfortable ones
How much of the rulebook we actually hold, what happens when we do not cover something, what we will never do at any price, and where your recipes go. If an answer here is softer than the coverage page, the coverage page is right.
What it is, and who it is for
- What does Nutrivo do?
- It reads your label artwork, checks it against the regulatory rules we hold for every market you sell in, and tells you four things: what is clear, what needs action, what we did not check, and what is blocked outright.
- It also names what you have to register, with which authority, by when, and what evidence they will ask for — separately from the label check, because a label can be perfect and the product still unsellable.
- Who is it for?
- Pet food and animal nutrition brands selling into more than one market, the contract manufacturers who make for them, and the regulatory consultants who do this work on their behalf.
- In practice the person using it is a regulatory or quality manager, an NPD manager who needs an answer before artwork is signed off, or a founder who is currently their own regulatory function.
- Who is it not for?
- Human food and supplements. There are good horizontal tools for those, and feed law is a different rulebook — species, life stage, additive conditions of use, PARNUT status. We went deep on one category rather than shallow across several.
- It is also not for somebody who wants a single green tick to show a retailer. The output is a report with states and gaps, which is more useful and less comfortable.
- What exactly is a check?
- One label artwork, assessed against every rule we hold for the markets you have selected, in the language each panel is printed in. A pack with German, French and Dutch panels is three language assessments of one artwork.
- Checks are never metered. Once a label is in your workspace you can re-check it as often as you like, on every plan including free.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. It is an assessment against rules we have encoded, with the article cited for each one. It is not an opinion on your legal position and it does not create a lawyer–client relationship.
- Nothing we produce transfers responsibility for your product's compliance. That stays with the operator named on the label, which is the whole basis of feed law.
How compliant is it, really
- How much of the rulebook do you actually hold?
- Read the coverage page and you will know exactly, market by market: which domains are encoded, by what method, the date a person last verified them, and every gap we know about by name. It is generated from the same table the engine queries when it runs a check, so it cannot be more confident than the product is.
- We would rather you check that page than take this one's word for it. A compliance answer you cannot audit is not worth much, and a vendor's own summary of its coverage is exactly the thing you should not have to trust.
- Which markets can I buy today?
- The European Union — all twenty-seven member states — the United Kingdom, with Great Britain and Northern Ireland held apart because their rules differ, and Switzerland with Norway. A region is sold whole.
- We do not sell the United States yet. It is designed for and it is not encoded, and we do not sell a region before we have published how deeply we cover every market in it.
- So how do the regimes actually differ?
- The EU is one supranational rulebook plus twenty-seven national layers for registration, language and enforcement. The UK is one country with two regimes, because Great Britain is diverging on retained law while Northern Ireland stays EU-aligned for goods. Switzerland and Norway each apply their own national regime outside that rulebook.
- None of those is a flat list, which is why markets are a tree in the product rather than a dropdown. A parent market never hides a failing child.
- How do you know your rules are right?
- We extract them from official source text with an article-level citation, and a person accepts every entry before it can affect a result. Numeric thresholds and prescribed legal terms are extracted twice, independently, and any disagreement goes to a person rather than to a tie-break rule.
- One distinction we hold to: a prescribed legal designation is looked up from the official text, never translated. A linguistically perfect translation of a legal term is still a defect.
- What happens if you do not cover something?
- The result is withheld and marked Not assessed, with a link to the coverage record that explains why — the method, the date, and the named gap. It is shown as prominently as any other state.
- A market where we hold no rules can never return Clear. That is enforced in the engine and in the database, not left to wording.
- What happens when a rule changes?
- Change tracking is built and tested, and it is not yet switched on in production. The seventeen EU instruments the rules cite are registered and rule-level diffing works against them; the scheduled polling has not yet run successfully, so until we tell you otherwise, assume nothing is watching on your behalf.
- When it is running, an alert will name which of your recipes a change touches and which it does not, and carry the date it takes effect so a fourteen-month transition reads differently from something urgent. Editorial corrections will never notify anybody, and re-checking after a change is free — a rule moving should not cost you anything to respond to.
- Do you check in the local language?
- Yes, always, on the string as printed, on every plan including free.
- This is not a premium feature anywhere. Selling somebody a market and then checking their English copy is selling a verdict we know is invalid for the artwork.
- Can you guarantee an authority will accept my label?
- No, and nobody honestly can. We can tell you it satisfies the rules we hold and name what we did not assess. An authority's decision is an authority's decision.
- If a supplier in this category tells you otherwise, ask them what happens contractually when an authority disagrees.
Trying it and paying for it
- Do I need to enter a card to start?
- No. One recipe, no card, no clock, no sales call, and no company-size field.
- You will not be asked for a card until you choose a plan, and nothing charges automatically at the end of anything.
- What do I get for free?
- The whole verdict on one recipe in one region: whether the label is compliant, every problem we find in plain terms, where each answer came from, and — as prominently — what we could not check and why. Re-checks are unlimited.
- The one thing you cannot do is send the report to someone else. We are not willing to sell you the truth about your own label back to you; the moment worth charging for is when the answer stops being yours and becomes a printer's, a retailer's or an authority's problem.
- How is it priced?
- On what you manage: recipes, regions, and people who edit. Never on how often you check, and never on tokens. Basic is €249 a month, Standard €499, Advanced from €999, all excluding VAT.
- A recipe is the thing you formulate. Pack sizes, artwork versions and label variants of the same recipe are free, so an eight-recipe brand is billed for eight rather than for its twenty-four pack codes.
- Why can I not buy a single country?
- Because a member state is one edition of a wider rulebook rather than a rulebook of its own. Selling you one country alone would mean selling you an answer that leans on supranational law we had not encoded for you.
- So a region is sold whole: the EU means all twenty-seven. It also costs us almost nothing extra, because a check costs what your artwork costs to read, not what our coverage costs to hold.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Your workspace stops accepting new labels. Nothing is deleted, everything you have checked stays readable, and every report you sent stays verifiable by whoever is holding it.
- We will not break a document somebody outside your company is relying on because your card expired.
- Do you offer a discount?
- One, and it is the same for everybody: an annual term is ten months for twelve. We concede on term rather than on price, so nobody on your plan is paying less than you.
Using it day to day
- What do I upload?
- Print-ready artwork as a PDF with live vector text. That is what lets us measure character heights against the legal minimums and pin each finding to a coordinate on the sheet. Phone photographs of the pack work too.
- Outlined text or a flattened image still gets you most of the check, and we tell you exactly which panels we could not measure rather than quietly skipping them.
- How long does a check take?
- Minutes for a normal pack across a handful of markets. The variable is how many language panels your artwork carries, not how many markets you have selected.
- Can my colleagues use it?
- Yes. People who only read are free and unlimited on every paid plan, internal or external. Only people who edit take a seat.
- We never charge for read access, because circulation is what makes the tool useful — taxing it would be taxing the thing we want to happen.
- Can my consultant or my supplier use it?
- A consultant is invited as an editor or a viewer, scoped to named recipes and markets, and marked external with an optional end date. A supplier gets a scoped link and needs no account at all.
- A supplier is never a seat and never appears on your people screen. You are not charged for your suppliers' access.
- Who can sign a certificate?
- A named person in your own company who holds signing authority for that market, granted explicitly. It is not implied by any role, including administrator, and it is never offered to an external person.
- A Certificate of Check is an internal attestation by that person. It is not a certificate issued by us or by an authority, and it makes no claim under eIDAS.
- Can I get my data out?
- Yes, on every plan, at no charge, with the ruleset version on every row.
- If you leave, you leave with everything. A tool holding your compliance history hostage is not one you should have trusted with it.
Data, security and trust
- Where is my data held?
- Your workspace, your recipes and your checks are stored and backed up in the European Union, in Ireland. They are not moved outside the European Economic Area for hosting or for backup.
- One transfer does leave the EEA and we would rather you read it here than find it in a sub-processor list: running a check sends the artwork image to Anthropic in the United States, under terms that prohibit training on it. Our privacy page names every processor and what each one receives.
- Do you train models on my recipes?
- No. Your material is never used to train models for the benefit of other customers, and our model providers are engaged on terms that prohibit training on what we send them.
- Your formulations are the most commercially sensitive thing in the product. Treating them as training data would be indefensible.
- Who can see my recipes?
- The people you admit, at the scope you give them. Each customer's data is separated from every other in the database itself, by row-level policies, rather than by application code — so a defect in the application cannot expose one customer to another.
- Our own people access workspace content only if you ask us to, and that access is recorded.
- Can the record be altered?
- Checks, findings and certificates are written to a store that accepts inserts only. Update and delete are revoked from every application role and rejected at the database level, including for us.
- That is deliberate. A record the application could rewrite would not be a record, and a certificate resting on it would be a claim.
- Do you support single sign-on?
- Not yet. It is on the Advanced plan's roadmap and it is not built, so it is not something to choose a plan for today.
- What if a recipient wants to check a report I sent them?
- A shared report carries its own link, and opening it shows the ruleset version it was checked against, the artwork it read, the date, and everything we did not assess. No account is needed.
- A standalone lookup page — enter the reference printed on a document, get back whether it is current or superseded — is designed and not yet built. When it exists it will never return your composition or your findings, because that would tell a stranger who our customers are.
Still deciding? Read what we have encoded, market by market — it is the page that would embarrass us if any of the above were overstated.
